Tay Peng Swee

Tay Peng Swee
Tay Peng Swee alias Tony Syamsudin was born in 1953 in Central Java, Indonesia. Peng Swee is a second generation ethnic Chinese Indonesian whose parents originated from the Fujian province in China. In his early years, Peng Swee received his formal art education in Central Java and was greatly inspired by another great ethnic Chinese artist, Lee Man Fong, who was the “Palace Artist” for President Sokarno.

Peng Swee first came to Bali in the early 1990s and has since chosen to stay on this beautiful island in order to immerse in and benefit from its highly artistic and creative environment. Although Peng Swee’s interest is in classical impressionist painting, he was coached and influenced in the 1980s by the late Affandi, who was one of the greatest Master Artists of Indonesia with an expressionist style. As a highly skilled and matured artist, Peng Swee focuses his creativity on familiar subjects such as Balinese lifestyles, religious ceremonies and the flora and fauna of Bali. The influence of Affandi is evident in Peng Swee’s brush strokes especially when he is depicting a traditional Balinese scene. In essence, Peng Swee’s style is both classical yet modern. In every one of Peng Swee’s work, one can never miss his signatory bold but delicate strokes and the vibrant colours he uses to express the dynamism of the subject matter. In terms of techniques, Peng Swee has a very sensitive feel for lighting and through the use of lights, he is able to capture and reflect the delicate mood of the subject accurately.
