Ton That Bang
Ton That Bang was born in 1963 in Quang Tri, Vietnam.
He graduated in Hue College of Arts in 1989. He is a member of The Fine Art Association of Ho Chi Minh City.
Ton That Bang is one of the most successful Vietnamese artists. Working independently and almost in seclusion, his works have a remarkable character with interesting ideas and images.
Bang began painting in 1986. As a full time artist, he has produced a good number of oil paintings and held exhibitions since 1997. His works often feature the subject of childhood. Lately, he has worked on the theme of destiny, linking it with his vision of childhood. Extremely plain and ingenuous, his paintings evoke his innermost feelings and memories that keep him in touch with his childlike spirit.
Bang often expressed through childish-looking people, awkward postures (the innocent victims of destiny), wooden horses (a vision of life through the eyes of children), dice (the game of des-tiny) and leaves (the passage of time and its accompanying loss). The composition is formed with only a few simple lines and patches of plain colours, looking as easy as well child’s play. It seems as though Bang’s world never grows up.
Everything in Bang’s painting is depicted by simple stylised drawings; a crooked table, a crooked table a tottering chair, a stiff, disproportional wooden horse, a modest house or the eight diagrams from the I Ching (易经). All of these symbols are placed in a two dimensional space, where the notion of perspective no longer exits. Sometimes, the space is divided into sectors, each of which confines certain things as if all were predetermined to stay within certain boundaries. As such, the whole view denotes a psychological inner life rather than an exterior appearance. It seems to carefully consider, the genuine reality of man’s life.
