Baby Blooms

Skillfully wielding the brush with oil on canvas, Huang Zhan Wen explores the concept of new beginnings, and his works reflect contemporary society and the country of his birth. He shows how in the pursuit of development and affluence, children are ‘incubated’ and raised in relatively small or even single-child families, and unfortunately oftentimes pampered and spoilt, resulting in ‘Little Emperors’, lacking resilience and tenacity. Huang cleverly combines imagery of new life and change, with candies and the ocean as metaphor to figuratively convey perils, paradigms, perspectives, possibilities and the potentially ponderous effects of policy on each new generation. Opening: 17 April 2009, 7pm, Tembusu Art Gallery, #01-05, MICA Building • Guest-of Honour: Dr Zhu Qi, Cultural Counsellor, Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, In the Republic of Singapore Exhibition from 18 - 30 April 2009
