Shen Jia Qi

Shen Jia Qi was born in Singapore in 1989.

She is an art practitioner and educator living and working in Singapore. Graduated from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in 2010, she has since been part of several group exhibitions and art fairs in local galleries and institutions. In 2015, she graduated from National Institute of Education, and is currently teaching art in secondary schools.

Inspired by her experiences in her social and living environments, she creates works that speaks about various social issues that she encounters. Using imagery from nature and everyday life, she seek to provide a window of quiet reflection for the viewer, and to invite conversation regarding similar ideas and experiences.

“My latest projects revolve around the theme of social apathy, and explores how the community here treats the issue of poverty and people in need. In contrast to Singapore’s opulent image and lavish lifestyles, the lives and struggles of lower income individuals are hidden out of sight. By surfacing the conditions and daily sights of these individuals, I am hoping to showcase a side of our island usually hidden from foreign eyes.” ~ Shen Jia Qi
