Tio Tjay
Tio Tjay, born in 1946 as Tio Hok Tjay, was an Indonesian painter. He has resided in Brazil since 1967. Tio Tjay enjoyed studying Chinese painting and calligraphy at a young age, his talent for art was already sensed by those who knew him then.
In 1967 he immigrated to Brazil with his family. There held many exhibitions, from São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia and even Paraguay. From 1971 to 1975 he resided in Manaus, where he befriended many natives, whom has given him an opputunity to venture into the Amazon. The Amazon Rainforest greatly inspired him to create paintings of its natural habitat. In 1976, he moved back to São Paulo and participate in the exhibition of Bienal Nacional de São Paulo.
The 1980's was a great decade for Tio Tjay. He was invited to take part in an exhibition in Italy, held in Naples for a cultural exchange between Brazil and Italy. A few years later, he was again invited to Tukuyama, Japan for a collective exhibition. And in the same year, he returned to Indonesia to create works in his motherland.
Tio Tjay's vibrant paintings retains very much of the influx of colours from the latino culture that was dominant in Brazil. In Indonesia, he has created a unique style of artworks strongly accented with a combination of the bold Latino colours and hints of the orient. Surely a unique and exquisite blend of the exotic Indonesia and mysterious Amazon.
