Faizal

Faizal was born in 1965 in Surakarta (Solo), Central Java, Indonesia.

Faizal graduated from high school in Solo and continued to study at the Indonesian Arts Institute (ISI), Yogyakarta. He participated in several solo and group exhibitions in Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Bali, Kuala Lumpur, Amsterdam, France and Singapore. His works are frequently being auctioned in Sotheby and auction houses in Indonesia.

He won two awards in Yogyakarta in 1986 for best sketching and best painting. In 1990, he received another best painting in the 6th Anniversary of ISI. One of his works earned him the Medaille du Conseil Generale - Prix D ‘Honneur in France in 1991.

The artist’s freely executed naïve works are full of bright colours which make them very cheerful and attractive. They are like the paintings done by children but they are more orderly and precise. Faizal does this by simplifying the forms of objects like all kinds of animals, trees, buildings and even the inspirations from his lovely daughter. He always likes to show pleasant scenes that are sweet or have the flavour of folk-tales. With this tendency, Faizal has caught the attention of the art world since the 1990s.

Faizal is able to manage his rich fantasy in order to create simpler impressions. His control of colour and composition also results in more complex moods.

The artist is recorded in the “Modern Indonesian Art” catalogue published by Koes Artbooks.
