Hartono

Hartono was born in July 1967 in Jakarta, Indonesia. Being born into a family of artists, Hartono showed great interest and talent in fine art since he was a child. In his formative years, Hartono was coached by his famous artist brother, Dr. Sutikno, who is a renowned contemporary artist in Indonesia. The influence of Dr. Sutikno in those early days is still evident years later and manifest in all of Hartono’s works. Perhaps the single most significant difference between the two brothers is Hartono’s use of colours, which tend to be brighter and more vibrant. This is the signature of young Hartono, who is dynamic and full of energy. He is also thirsty for opportunities to express himself and experiment with new things.

Hartono relocated to the beautiful island of Bali after he finished his high school education. He was attracted to Bali by the depth and richness of its artistic and cultural heritage. With the strong foundation laid by Dr. Sutikno during his younger days, Hartono found great inspiration from the Balinese tradition and culture, which has helped immensely in Hartono’s first breakthrough in his personal artistic style. Hartono has a penchant for modern figurative painting and the subject matter depicted most frequently in Hartono’s works is women set in an idyllic, care-free environment. Although his style is still evolving and his technique maturing, the distinctive characteristics of Hartono’s works are modern and bold with his subject matters exuding a sense of confidence and equanimity. This expression of emotional calmness is reflective of the rich history and the depth of the Indonesian society that Hartono and his subjects originate from.
