Arthur Lim

Arthur Lim

Arthur Lim was born in Singapore in 1964.

He graduated from Baharuddin Vocational Institute in 1989. His final semester was illustration.

Arthur’s influences includes old masters such as Caravaggio, Vermeer van Delft, Jacques Louis David, Caspar David Friedrich and Segantini from western countries, to our very own Nanyang pioneer artists like Georgette Chen, Tay Bak Koi and Liu Kang.

His inspiration stems from snapshots of everyday life – be it in the laundry room, kitchen or shopping in the supermarket.

He is exploring the classic painting concepts (still life) with fine and concise brushstrokes. Although photos are used as a starting point in the painting process, the intention is not to fool the eye but to create images that are coherent and self-contained, allowing space for interpretation. So the goal is to achieve a strong and independent visual idea, not a slavish copy.

Having grown up in Singapore, he cherishes the common things in his country: sunshine, light and heat which are in constant supply. Therefore light has become an important element in his paintings. The way the light pours over objects, as it defines the object as a body, what area it emphasizes and what disappears in the shadows are common themes throughout his works. In particular the shadows that live, softly vibrating in the dimmed light, giving the painting composition grip to apply on his work.

Arthur is a comittee member of The Society of Chinese Artists, the most established art society in Singapore.

  • The subject of my paintings is none other than our Singaporean style of living; our routine trips to the supermarkets to buy and prepare food for our loved ones.
  • As we walk down the various shelves displaying item over item of products we use daily, we choose the best fruits and vegetables for our families.
  • I have used oil as the medium to paint and capture the natural colours that fruit and vegetables in the supermarket radiate.
  • I believe that how the products are displayed, how OUR people eat; what they eat and don't eat shows much about how they view food, life and health in a nutshell.
  • This is how I try to bring across the culture of our immediate local food source - Supermarkets - Fruits Love.
